Fiercely protecting animal welfare
Following biological rhythms and seasonal cycles
They see them born and grow up, and they each have their own name they’re called by. Our members and breeders are therefore intimately acquainted with the habits and personalities of each of their Reggiana Vacche Rosse cows. Each day they faithfully tend to them with loving care and the utmost attention, as true guardians of a thousand-year-old tradition that, however, risked disappearing around the 1980s.
The industrialisation processes of post-World-War-II Italy and the increased demand for Parmigiano Reggiano in fact led to the Reggiana breed being gradually replaced with breeds such as the Frisona, capable of producing greater quantities of milk.
But certain far-sighted breeders were well familiar with the rich cheesemaking properties of the Vacche Rosse’s milk, not to mention their characteristic robustness, longevity and strength. They implemented a project to help these cows recover, gradually repopulating them from the 600 or so animals that remained.

Guaranteeing a transparent, genuine supply chain
Following the very same path, our Vacche Rosse Consortium then came to life: today it comprises 31 breeder-members who have employed their boundless passion and sense of cooperation to carry on the work of protecting and enhancing the Rossa Reggiana for thirty years. This work respects natural biological cycles and animal welfare, without forcing production in any way – as provided, moreover, by the specific, scrupulous requirements of the ANABoRaRe – Associazione Nazionale Allevatori Bovini di Razza Reggiana (National Association of Reggiana Cattle Breeders). Thus, starting from the green grass which they use to feed each their cattle, our breeders are the guarantors of a transparent, genuine supply chain for the milk obtained: from milking to pure-bred processing, all the way to homes across Italy and around the world. An amazing journey guided by the shining star of excellence, where the leading players form a group we are proud to count among our members.
